Comments

When users post comments, we gather information from the comment form. We also record the user’s IP address and browser details to counteract spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

When uploading images to the website, please refrain from including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Website visitors have the ability to download these images and access any embedded location information.

Cookies

When you comment on our site, you have the option to store your name, email, and website in cookies. This is for your ease, preventing you from re-entering details for future comments. These cookies remain for a year.

Visiting our login page will trigger a temporary cookie to check your browser’s cookie acceptance. This cookie, devoid of personal data, disappears once you close the browser.

Upon logging in, we’ll initiate various cookies that remember your login details and screen preferences. While login cookies stay for two days, screen preference ones last a year. If you choose “Remember Me”, your login maintains for two weeks. However, logging out deletes the login cookies.

Editing or publishing an article places another cookie in your browser. It doesn’t contain personal info but notes the post ID of your recent edit. This cookie vanishes after a day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you hold an account or have commented on this site, you can ask for an export of your personal data we possess, encompassing data you’ve given us. Additionally, you can request the deletion of your personal information. However, this won’t cover data we’re mandated to retain for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
